Wed 21st
We set off at 0520, dark and cold but dry. Not a bad journey, we had a lot of drizzle and spray and there was road works and lots of hold ups. Arrived at Dover in good time for 12.10 ferry. A very smooth crossing, it was quite bright and a bit of watery sunshine in Calais but very cold. There was a massive police presence in and around the port and groups of refugees obviously trying to get to England. We were glad we had decided not to stop on the Calais Aire, which when we saw it from the ferry was empty, only one van on there. We went to Auchan for fuel and let Crackers stretch her legs and drove to Le Touquet, found a different Aire to last year by an equestrian centre, it was €9 a night but the services were out of order and the ticket machine wouldn't take a note so I hung onto my money in case someone came collecting. Took the dog a short walk then had tea and a discussion about tomorrow's route before an early night.

Thurs 22nd
A very cold night, 0c when we woke up. No one came for any money. Were away by 09.15, the sun was very bright and low in the sky getting in our eyes. The ground was white over with frost. We managed to pass Rouen with no trouble. A long day but dry, the further south we got the less frost on the ground but it was still very cold 4c when we got to Neuille Pont Pierre the Aire was closed, workmen with trucks and barriers told us we couldn't stop there. We looked in the book and saw that there was one at the new Super U supermarket and they said we could park there,there was an Aire water point and dump, not ideal felt a bit exposed. The sun went down in a red ball.

Fri 23rd
Not a very restful night, late evening and early morning there seemed to be odd activities going on, a car and a van with doors open and people talking? The car park emptied overnight except for one car which a van visited at about 5am? Read for a while then got cuppa about 6.15. We decided to get water and empty loo but the machine took one euro but not the other, asked a lady at petrol pumps if she would change it for me but that didn't work either, tried the shop but it wasn't open and as it was -1c so we gave up and got away by 08.40. Not a bad journey, got past Tours with no trouble, it was dull with low, grey skies but dry, in the afternoon it brightened up a bit and the cloud lifted. We got to Parentis en Born only to find that there was no Aire behind the Super U, an Aldi had been built there! We found that there was another on by the lake which we found, it was a really good one, €7.20 per 24hrs payable with credit card, there was a barrier, electric hook ups and water/waste disposal so we thought it well worth it, felt a lot more secure than last night. It was a bit milder 7c.

Sat 24th
A nice, peaceful night. Up and away by 0855, very cold 0c, we left the heating on low all night and it was so much nicer. As we left Parentis we noticed that they had a bullring. Low sun again and quite hazy, a very slow journey as the road is so twisty through towns with lots of roundabouts, the scenery and arcHitecture, where it was not industrial, was quite alpine. We had noticed driving through France that there is a lot of regeneration in the towns, new buildings and hyper markets. We also noticed that a lot of the new supermarkets had motorhome dump signs. We arrived at Zarautz at 12.40 and were greeted by Harry & Loraine, sat and had lunch with them before setting up and having a shower (most welcome). They cooked tea for us.

Sun 25th
It rained and was windy in the night, we could also hear the surf pounding on the beach below, we left the fire on low again, it made such a difference. I did not get a good night though because of Rich snoring! It was a sunny morning, about 3c. We left at 09.55, there was quite a lot of snow on the mountains but the roads were clear, it was a good run and we arrived in Burgos at 1.00pm, Harry & Loraine arrived just after us having left later but taken the toll road. We had a bit of lunch then Loraine and I took a walk round the site, there was quite a bit of snow on the ground and Crackers had great fun sliding in it. After tea H&L came round for a chat. I paid for wifi but not a very good signal, I did find coordinates for the site tomorrow, we had been having doubts about which one of two advertised we should go to as emails I had from them did not translate very well.

Mon 26th
A good nights sleep, away by 0950 to go to a site near Avila for a week, lovely sunny morning but still cold. We got the the site only to find it closed so realised that we needed to go to the other one, we managed to contact H&L and stop them going down a difficult track then met up with them to find the other site. We drove miles around a lake on narrow, twisting roads and when we got there we found that was closed as well, to say we were annoyed is putting it mildly! We decided to get out of the park, it was a magnificent place with the lake at the bottom and huge granite boulders balancing precariously. We decided to try and find a roadside service area to sleep in as it was getting on, we stopped for fuel and it was 80 miles from Plascencia so we decided to try and make it. The roads started off long and straight and we made good time until we came to a mountain that we had to descend and it was z bends all the way with very steep inclines, we drove into a magnificent sunset arriving at 7.30. The gate to the site was open and we drove in but all was in darkness, we were just trying to decide where to pitch when a man appeared and showed us where to park and asked for €15. We got a quick tea and bed. We had seen quite a few kites and birds of prey and we also saw a lot of cattle and horses in fields, as we descended the mountain all the side of it were terraced and planted with what we assumed were fruit trees. We saw our first oranges growing and it was quite a bit milder, although most of the day we had been driving through snow covered fields.

Tue 27th
A good nights sleep and a bit milder overnight although it was 0c when we woke. It was a clear morning and the site looked a lot better in daylight so we decided to stay another night. Harry had trouble with the electrics and had had no power so no heat all night, he and Rich had a look at it and tried to sort it but had to get the lad to come and reset the trip, they decided it was the fridge that was the problem so switched it off and put stuff in ours, but it still went again, finally it turned out that they were only on 5amps and being a modern caravan it needed 10, once the lad sorted that it seemed to be okay. It was a nice, sunny day about 12c. We were the only ones on site last night but 3 more unite came in today and they put some lights on. The shower block was good and clean but not heated. There were a lot of birds about, woodpecker, nuthatch and we heard an owl. There was free wifi on site and I had an email letting me know that the site in Avila would be closed!
Wed 28th
A cold night again, 0c when we woke but clear skies and the sun soon rose. We were away by 10.30 and arrived at Caceres at 11.30. We weren't due there until Sun but they allowed us to move the booking and booked in for two nights. It was a good journey on a good road, we saw a flock of Lapwing, some Storks and some Larks. It was a lovely, sunny day. We set up and had some lunch then Harry drove us to Mercadona to get a few supplies. After tea we had a couple of games before bed.

Thurs 29th
Quite cloudy this morning, and very misty. We caught the bus into town, quite a big city, we walked to the old centre stopping for a drink in a cafe, I asked for tea with milk and got a teapot full of milk with a tea bag in it, By now the sun had come out and was a bit warmer, we watched a couple of storks on the church roof whilst we were sitting there. We had a walk round the old town, very ancient with narrow, cobbled streets, a bit worrying as traffic was coming down them and we had to plaster ourselves against the wall. There was a cold wind blowing. We found a large square outside the old walls and there was a demonstration going on, schoolchildren demonstrating for peace we gathered. We went into a small cafe for tapas which was very nice, then back to the bus we were all quite cold by now.
As we walked over the bridge back to the site we saw 2 Eagles over the trees. We were sitting reading in the van and who should we see walking by but Colin, they had parked next to Harry. We had a natter then went to the site restaurant with them for a meal in the evening, it was a bit of an odd meal, just a plate of various sorts of meat, no veg, plenty to take home for Crackers! Fri 30th We saw Gill & Colin off, heading for Albufeira, then took a walk across the road to the huge Chinese Shop, got a couple of things. It was cloudy and windy. After lunch Loraine and I did a bit of sewing. There was a dilapidated gazebo on a pitch opposite and the wind was tearing it up, Harry was worried about it flying off and hitting his van so he reported it and moved his van back a bit, a couple of chaps came and pulled it down. After tea we had a couple of games.
Sat 31st
Very windy night but calmed down a bit by morning, a rain shower in the night. Bright and sunny but still cold wind. Rich washed the van in the morning and after lunch Harry took us a ride to a church just outside town, The Sanctuary of the Virgin Montana. It was on top of a hill overlooking the surrounding plains. The church was well maintained with flowers around the altar and nicely painted walls. The altarpiece was spectacular, covering one wall, with the Virgin's effigy, dressed in brocade behind glass, the whole piece gilded and covered with carved babies and babies heads, a bit weird. Loraine and I did some sewing in the afternoon and we had a couple of games in the evening. It had been bright and sunny all day but still with the cold wind, not quite as gusty as yesterday.
Sun 1st Feb
The wind dropped during the night but it was cold, clear blue skies and sunshin. We were up and away by 09.30 a nice quiet run arriving in Merida at 10.40. We saw storks and kites and also a Roman bridge over the dual carriageway which we couldn't work out how it had survived there. The site was open but no one at reception, a notice told us to pitch and go and pay at 1800hrs. On our journey today the van mileometer turned 90,000. We had lunch then drove into town to see the Roman remains which were absolutely fantastic. The first place we found was an exhibition based on a Roman road which ran through the town, amazingly complete, the exhibition was closed but we were pointed in the direction of the Theatre. We paid an entrance fee, which would have given us access to all the sites but not all were open and they were scattered round town. The amphitheatre was quite well preserved/restored and there were explanations in English about the fights and types of gladiators, apparently if they survived five years they were given their freedom and awarded a wooden sword. Each one had his own style of dress and armour. The theatre itself was amazing, huge and impressive, giant columns and statues with the remains of friezes, surprisingly reminiscent of our theatres today only much bigger!
At one point I leant on a metal post and it gave way and three large stones fell, luckily no one saw and non landed on me. We saw the auquaduct as we drove in and out of town,it also was impressive. We all thought it was well worth the visit. Back to site an hour of sewing another tea and a couple of games before bed. It had been sunny but cold all day.

Mon 2nd
We were up and away by 09.30, it was a bit milder but breezy and cloudy. Not a bad trip after a false start getting out of Merida, the weather alternated between sunny, cloudy and drizzly. We stopped for fuel and to get a sandwich and arrived at Albufeira at 3.15. Gill & Colin greeted us and we found a pitch and parked up. We had a drink with G&C then tea and an early night. The site has changed a bit, we have cards with our photo on them to get in and out and the supermarket has changed hands, also wifi is all over the camp free,we parked nearer the heated shower block which is nice. Not many faces we know.

Tue 3rd
A good night's sleep and not too early start. 10c cloudy with sunny patches. A busy morning setting up and giving the van a good clean. It went quite cool in the afternoon but stayed dry. A bit of sewing in the afternoon then a chat with Gill & Colin in the evening.
Wed 4th
Showers overnight again and a cold morning, it was very breezy again. We walked across to the cafe across the road, H&L, G&C and us, had a couple of drinks and Loraine made a hair appointment, we got some oranges then back to site. In the afternoon we did some washing, it dried well as it was sunny and windy, the day got a bit warmer as the wind dropped but was cool again by evening. H&L came for a game in the evening.
Thurs 5th
A cold night and still cold when we woke, although bright and sunny. We all got the bus into town, we went to Fisherman's Beach and had a coffee and cake, it was lovely sitting in the sun out of the wind, the sea was calm and a lovely blue. We walked on round the town and met the waitress from Travessa, the cafe we'd used before so we went in for lunch which was very nice, the waiter had very good English and had a bit of a laugh with us. Back on the bus after a cold wait and having to change at the bus station, cuppa with G&C then back to van. Few games with H&L before bed.
Fri 6th
Another cold night but bright morning. We went to the rally coffee morning booked Sun lunch and a Chinese meal, bit of confusion about that but got it sorted. We then went up to the Chinese shop which is vast and disappointing. Called at site supermarket and sat in the sun having a coffee and cake. Did a bit of sewing with Loraine and Gill, the afternoon had been quite warm in the sun. Tea and a couple of games before bed.
Sat 7th
Another cold night but bright and clear morning. Gill, Loraine and I went to the hairdressers, I had mine cut Gill had a wash and blow dry and we all sat in the sun waiting for each other. In the afternoon we did a bit of sewing and in the evening went for a Chinese meal with the rally. The meal was okay, food good but not hot enough, there were 48 of us and we were a bit crammed in to a back room making it difficult to get up and down to the buffet, we were sat next to the usual noisy crowd ( the ones who need to let everyone else know what a good time they are having and what fun people they are by talking at the top of their voices and cackling with laughter at every oportunity) making conversation difficult, but we all enjoyed it on the whole. It was a crisp clear night when we got back, lots of stars shining in the inky sky.
Sun 8th
Woke to a clear bright morning again, slight frost overnight. Had a quiet morning, nice and warm in the sun. Went to rally Sunday lunch. This was another bun fight; we went up and had a drink on the terrace which was lovely sitting in the hot sun. When 1 o'clock came we had to wait for the stewards to tell us where to sit, it was 1.30 before we were seated and the rooms were full with rallyers and others, everyone got up at once to go to the buffet resulting in a long, slow queue, the food when we got it was very good and hot. A quiet afternoon, Rich slept I read, I gave Crackers her tea then took her a walk, Rich still sleeping, I met H&L so we walked round together. I watched Countryfile and Call the Midwife on my iPad.
Mon 9th
Cold and bright again. Harry took us to Loule, we had a drink in a cafe and went round the market, bought some fish for tea. Harry was looking for a caravan place as he wanted to buy a table, we needed a chair as ours had broken but Rich got a bolt from a shop to mend it. We went to a Continente supermarket for some groceries then back to site. Rich mended the chair and we had the fish for tea which was nice. In the evening we went to a "concert" an amateur show put on by various rallyers, it was not wonderful! One or two people were good but on the whole a bit cringe making!
Tue 10th
Quite a bit of rain overnight and raining this morning. We fetched a hire car, from reception then sat and chatted with H&L,G&C til lunch time, it rained most of the time. After lunch we drove to the Algarve shopping centre, it has changed quite a bit in 2 years, the food hall upgraded and some new shops, also it was really busy which we'd not seen before. We had a look round the shops, got a top in C&A, then back to site where we sat in G&Cs van and chatted. After tea a couple of games before bed. It had brightened up a bit in the afternoon but by evening rain had set in and the site was very wet.
Wed 11th
A better morning, no wind, no rain a bit cloudy. We drove to the Chinese shop then to Il Cappuccino, for a drink, called at Aldi then had a quiet afternoon. We got the bus into town and went to El Travessa for a meal to celebrate Richie's birthday, had a good meal and enjoyed the company, had a bit of a laugh with the waiter again.
We got a taxi back to site then had a drink and chat at ours before bed. The weather had been a bit better no real rain but a bit cloudy, warmer though.
Thurs 12th
Another cold night but clear morning which soon warmed up. Loraine, Gill and I went to a craft class to make an orange bag out of plastic string, hardly anyone could crochet so L & I ended up teaching some of them, Loraine had success with Gill but I failed with my pupil! After a bit of lunch we drove to Silves, after a tour of the towns cobbled back streets we finally found the castle, where an old chap asked for parking money, not really a car park attendant but never mind. We went to a cafe on a very sloping street where there was an English proprietor and had coffee and cake, quite a variety of cakes between us, he was a bit "in your face" heavy handed with repartee.
We went up to the castle where we had to pay, you could only get in as a pensioner if you had ID! Gill & Colin didn't so had to pay full price. There was not much within the walls which were impressive but it was interesting and fantastic views over the surrounding countryside which was very pretty, green and hilly. Back to site for tea then I went to the quiz night with the other 4. When we got there there was no where to sit, you couldn't get to the bar and there didn't seem to be any organisation so we left. I went to H&Ls for a cuppa.
Fri 13th
A bright, clear morning. We took H&L out in our hire car, we went to Gale beach where we had a walk and Crackers had a grand time.
We called for a drink at a cafe up from the beach then back to site for lunch. We sat out in the lovely sun for an hour then went off again and found another beach at Olhas de Agua, where we had another short walk, then we drove to Falasia beach which was way down below multi coloured cliffs, there were rickety steps down but we didn't go. Back to site for tea and a couple of games before bed.
Sat 14th
We all went off to Gale beach calling on the way at a roadside stand for some fruit and veg. Loraine, Gill & Colin went for a coffee, Rich, Harry and I walked on the beach with Crackers. Harry persuaded me that paddling was a good idea, it wasn't too bad until Crackers jumped at me just as a wave broke and I got soaked. When we got to the rocks at the end of the beach we saw a set piece of a champagne bottle with two glasses, half full, and a bunch of red and white roses set up in the sand?? We went back to the cafe and had to sit outside for a drink. We had taken a picnic but had to go back to site for me to get dry trousers so we had our picnic outside Gill & Colin's van. We took Gill & Colin for a ride to see the beach and cliffs we'd seen yesterday, the weather has turned nasty and it was windy and breezy so we didn't stay out of the car for long. We went to look at a motorhome site which was full , mostly German and French, very well set out, small hard standing pitches with electric, €8 a night. Back to site tea and a few games before bed. It rained quite heavily.
Sun 15th
Cloudy morning but a bit better than yesterday. We returned the car and spent the morning washing, it dried pretty well, but it was quite cool and not much wind. In the afternoon We did a bit of sewing, Gill joined us. We had tea and watched a video Gill had lent us but it stopped playing so gave up.
Mon 16th
Another cloudy morning, we went on the rally walk, usual route across the new road and lanes, crackers was very good. After lunch we got the bus into town with H&L, had a bit of a mooch around the shops and a drink on Fisherman's beach and then got a taxi back, it is cheaper than the bus. Tea and an early night.
Tue 17th
Bright sunny skies but breezy today so quite cool. After lunch we went on a trip to see the Carnaval at Alte, a small town in the hills. We had a drink at a cafe then walked round to find a place to watch from, we found a spot on the church steps in the sun. There was loud music being piped all round town and the Carnaval was good, some floats we recognised, Robin Hood, 1001 Dalmatians but some we didn't understand. We had a drink in another cafe and a pork roll from the hog roast before getting the bus back. Some people had booked a meal but the cafe said they weren't booked? A quick tea then R & I played cards for a while.
Wed 18th
A nice morning, chilly but bright and the wind had dropped. During the night I had been unwell and been sick, I put it down to the pork roll. We went on a trip to a market at Quateria, buses were late, as usual, the traffic was really bad. We had a good wander round the market, bought a couple of scarves and some towels. It had been lovely and sunny. Back to site for tea and a we had a game of cards with H&L.
Thurs 19th
A lovely, bright, still morning. Gill, Loraine and I went to a craft morning, didn't do a lot just our own stuff but nice to meet others. After lunch lay in the sun for awhile then we went to the shop and had a coffee then we sat outside and sewed for an hour or so. After tea we all went to Harry's and played cards, Colin had not been well all day but was better this evening.
Fri 20th
Not a bad morning, I went to coffee morning then we took Crackers a walk on the new road, Loraine & Harry came with us and we had a drink at the cafe on our way back. We did some sewing in the afternoon then in the evening they all came to us for cards so a late night.
Sat 21st
Harry took me, Gill & Loraine food shopping. First stop was Ferreiras where we had a tea and cake before going to the butchers where we got some lovely meat very reasonably priced. We went on to Iceland and Aldi at the Algarve shopping centre where we all had a good stock up on fresh food. A late lunch then quiet afternoon we had steak from butchers for tea, not wonderful but okay. Watched a video Gill lent us.
Sun22nd
A lovely sunny, breezy morning, we did the washing and it dried beautifully. I face timed Jan and had a chat then sat in sun for a while. A bit of sewing in the afternoon whilst men bouled then I cooked a chicken dinner which was very nice. We all went to Colin's for cards, a late night.
Mon 23rd
A bit cloudy this morning but milder. Colin hired a car and after lunch we drove to Alte, has a drink and cake then walked round the town, very quiet after the carnival last week, we walked through the cobbled streets to a bridge over a small river, there was an ancient wash house, still with running water and looked like it was still used. Back for a read and tea then we went to line dancing, just a few very easy ones but made a change.
Tue 24th
Not a bad morning, chilly breeze though. We drove to Alvor, a beautiful beach which we had a walk along then a drink in a cafe on the dunes. On the approach to the beach there was a huge Aire full of motorhomes. We drove on to Portimao where we had a walk round looking for a Chinese restaurant, we ended up in a Japanese one, Rich and I had the menu of the day for€8.50, the others had chicken & chips. We really enjoyed it, it was mostly sushi and tempura battered things. We had a look round a Chinese shop, of course! Then drove to Ferragudo where we had another short walk round and drink in cafe, then back to site. H&L came round for a couple of games.
Wed 25th
Another crisp, cool morning, the sun was nice but the breeze cool. We took Crackers a walk up the new road Harry took Loraine so far in the car then we walked back to the cafe for a coffee. On the way back we booked for the Hog Roast tomorrow. After lunch Loraine and I did some sewing, I started a new "shell picture". Then we had couple of games before bed.
Thurs 26th
A cold wind this morning but sunny. We went to the raft session but no one else was there so we sat in Loraine's van and did a bit while men played boules. In the afternoon we went to the hog roast, it was very good, food good and plenty of it and also plenty of drink, it was very busy and it was very hot sitting on the terrace. There was a guest appearance by someone off Coronation Street. Rich was in bed by 4.30! I watched a video.
Fri 27th
Another sunny day, but still breezy. We all drove to Loule, had a look at the old town and went round the market, there were a lot of chocolate stalls. We got stuff for BBQ tomorrow. Called at Continente then went on to Vilamoura. Rich got some shoes in Chinese shop. We had a snack at a roadside cafe, whilst there we witnessed a car reversing into another. In the evening we went for a meal with Gill & Colin, we took a taxi up to Tipico but it was closed so we had to walk back down to the site where we got a bus into town. Had a really good meal but the service was a bit slow.
Sat 28th
A bit overcast this morning, did a bit of sewing and got ready for BBQ, Rich moved the wind breaks to make a bigger space, Harry &Loraine and Gill & Colin brought their stuff round and Rich did the cooking, we had an enjoyable time but it was a bit cloudy and cool.

Sun 1st Mar
We were just getting breakfast when Loraine came round very upset, Harry was having a bad nosebleed and it had been going on for almost an hour, we dropped everything and took him down to the hospital, Loraine drove! When we got there they took him straight through to the treatment area but needed his passport, I stayed while Rich & Loraine went back for it. We waited for a good while then Rich said he may as well go so he walked back to the site. We must have waited 2 hours with nothing said to us, there was a constant stream of people coming in. Eventually Loraine went to ask what was happening and they let her go to see him he had been ready to be discharged but was dizzy when he sat up so they wanted to keep him in a bit longer, we decided to go back and get a drink and bite to eat then return. When we got back Rich had started the washing, we hadn't been there half an hour when Harry turned up! He had been discharged, started to walk but then got a taxi, he did not look at all well. He slept for most of the day and by tea time was feeling better and looked much better. We did our washing and helped Loraine with hers then sat in beautiful sunshine for the afternoon. It was the best weather so far.
Mon 2nd
Another lovely morning with a beautiful "mackerel" sky, white clouds against a clear blue background. Harry had had a good night and was up and about but didn't look well and was very weak. Loraine and I went into town on the bus, had a bit of lunch overlooking the beach then a good mooch round the shops. When we got back Harry seemed a lot better and looked more like himself. After tea Rich and I took Crackers for a walk on the new road and then I went to line dancing. It had been a lovely summery day, hot sun and hardly any breeze.
Tue 3rd
Another fine morning, still a bit cool but soon warmed up. Loraine, Gill & I took a taxi to the market and had a good wander round, the usual noisy, bustling place, bought a scarf and a tea towel, it was really hot in the sun. In the afternoon we went to a restaurant, Il Cappucino, with H&L, took a taxi again. We had a really good meal for €7.50. Did nothing for the rest of the day, too late to sunbathe , and watched a video.
Wed 4th
A bit hazy this morning but mild, no breeze. Harry took me, Gill & Loraine up the lanes to get some photos of the flowers and then dropped us into town. We took some pics of the sand sculptures on Fisherman's beach and had a cuppa and apple pie. Looked round the shops again, I bought a lovely leather handbag. We got a taxi back to site, Rich had started to pack a few things outside. After lunch we went to the beach, Gale was a bit busy for the dog so we drove a bit further to another quieter one, the beach was more sloping and the sea was quite rough, I managed to get soaked paddling again! I'd taken the precaution of taking a spare pair of trousers. We had a drink at a beachside cafe, it was lovely and warm. It was the first time Harry had driven this week. Back to site and tea and a game of cards.
Thurs 5th
Another nice but slightly hazy morning. H&L and I went to find a post office as we were still a bit worried about the road toll situation, we had logged in when we arrived but the ticket expired 2 days ago, we read on the Internet that the post offices knew all the details and would give us a pass for one trip. When we found the post office, took our ticket and queued the girl didn't know anything about it, even called a supervisor over, many shrugs and puzzled looks. Did we want to go to the airport? No. Did we want a €20 ticket to last however long? No. We want to take one trip out of the country into Spain, blank looks and then we were told to just drive out and wave bye bye to Portugal! Of course most of this was in mime. Quick trip to Chinese shop for Loraine to replace her bucket, her Lakeland one having been kept by the hospital full of Harry's blood. Back on site and packed up pitch etc. Had an hour or so with Gill then a bit of lunch and a spot of sunbathing. In the evening we all went to Il Capuccinos for a meal which was a very nice evening. We enjoyed our time in Albufeira, didn't do much with the rally as the things we did we thought were not well organised. We felt the stewards were a bit half hearted, didn't check when Harry was ill. We saw quite a bit of birdlife, serin and little egrets mostly but saw magpies and hoopoe and heard a cuckoo,the area we were in had more trees, mimosa, bottle brush, pepper and eucalyptus. The whole area was a sea of yellow with oxalis flowers.

Quite cool this morning but clear skies. We finished packing up and said goodbye to Gil & Colin left at 10.00. A good run, we stopped for fuel just as we entered Spain and had a coffe and doughnut. Arrived El Rocio at 1.00, 2.00 Spanish time. The site was very busy, seems to be 2 rallies, ACSI and Caravan Club, we were lucky to get adjacent pitches a people were rolling in. It was very hot so sat for a while. We shared tea with H&L then had an early night.

Sat 7th
Woke in the night and it was so quiet couldn't get back to sleep, no road noise or dogs barking as there was at Albufeira, had a cuppa and read. Bright cool morning. We went to Almonte had a drink and went to the municipal market where we got some meat, fish and veg, then into Mercadona for rest of the shopping, it was a bit chaotic. Back to site for lunch and a rest then went into El Rocio, it was quite busy and quite a few horses about and people in the "brotherhood" houses, lots of noisy groups. We called at a cafe and had tapas which was very nice. H&L came round for a game. It had been a very hot day after the cool start, bright blue sky without a cloud.
Sun 8th
Another beautiful morning. We went into El Rocio and watched a couple of parades; youngsters dressed in traditional hats and trousers led playing flutes and drums, very slowly, followed by people carrying gold and silver staves, women carried flower baskets and more children carried fruit, veg and tinned goods in baskets, the banners came last surrounded by town dignitaries. As one group left the church the bells pealed out and the next group filed in. It was very interesting and different to any church service at home. The town was very busy with horse and mule carts giving trips, some with jingling harness, but some unfortunately looking a bit dusty and sad. It was very hot with a cloudless blue sky. Back on site I put the huge chicken we'd bought yesterday in the oven to cook slowly. We had a bit of lunch and sat in the sun for a while, it was very hot. There was an English couple with a huge van with slide outs and a gazebo on their pitch, real flashy, Harry reckoned he was a criminal on the run! They had 2 dogs and a cat with them and the dog was continually barking and she was yelling at it you could hear her all over the site. While we were sitting outside they had a phone call, both of the shouting at the top of their voices, they were 4 pitches away and we could hear every word it was ridiculous. Loraine and I did a bit of sewing, then Harry did the veg and we had a lovely Sunday roast dinner. After dinner we went round for a game and unfortunately Harry had another nose bleed, it seemed to be mild so hope for the best. We went to check where the nearest emergency centre is just in case. There was a beautiful sunset.
Mon 9th
Bright again this morning, Harry was fine. We went to terrace cafe to check on Internet then had a bit of lunch. After lunch we drove to Acerbon Palace in Donana National Park. Had a look round the house, an old hunting lodge, and stroll around the grounds, it was a glorious day sunny with a light breeze, there were lots of different wild flowers, some very small and butterflies about. As we drove back we parked by the lake at El Rocio to take some photos, there were swallows diving down to the mud and storks, flamingos and a glossy ibis on the water. Back for tea, chicken curry, and a few games before bed.
Tue 10th
A misty morning and everything very damp. We drove to Heulva to see the replica ships, Pinta, Nina & Santa Maria, in which Columbus set sail for the Indies but discovered America instead.
The mist lifted and it was warm, unfortunately we were over run by school parties and the peace was shattered. It was very interesting. We went on to find the Chinese Wok restaurant but the old chap who takes euros for parking told us it had moved and gave us directions. We found it and it was huge, there were only 3 people in but it did fill up a bit later. The food was as good as ever. Heading back for site we got a bit lost and went quite a bit out of our way. A very nice, interesting day, but tiring!
Wed 11th
A bright, clear morning again. Harry took Loraine and I into El Rocio for a last look round, it was very quiet but still quite a few horse and traps around. We had a drink and Loraine got a couple of things for her grandchildren. We had a look at some horses with foals by the lake and back for lunch.

Too hot to sit in sun so read in shade for a while then went to cafe for Internet, not a very good signal. We sewed for a while then got a joint tea eating outside in our awning. Packed up the awning and an early night.

A very misty, damp morning. We were away by 10.20, we went in convoy as we were a bit worried about Harry still. As we got inland the mist cleared but there was the odd patch until beyond Seville. We stopped for fuel and lunch then carried on, I dozed for quite a while. We arrived at Caceres at 3 and set up pitch, it was hot but not as hot as El Rocio had been. I changed sheets ready for washing tomorrow, and had a sweep out, everything was so sandy from El Rocio. Went to site restaurant for a meal which was very nice.

Fri 13th
Cool and breezy this morning. Did loads of washing which dried well with sun and wind, also gave Crackers a bath. In afternoon Harry, Loraine and I walked over to Chinese shop and to find a cash machine on the industrial estate, it was a huge estate and we walked for ages and we're giving up when we found a cafe so we went I. For a drink and sit down, it was a surprise, we'd expected a scruffy canteen but it was very clean. We carried on and a man took pity on us wandering round like lost souls and told us where the bank was, we had to retrace our steps. Finally back to site and got tea and got washing in then a game of cards before bed.

Cool wind this morning, packed up and away by 10.10. A good, uneventful journey through lovely green valleys with lots of sheep and cattle. Around Plasencia we saw many birds of prey , kites and 20-30 eagles amongst others we didn't know, we also saw lots of stork's nests. We stopped for fuel just off the motorway and had a drink and a bun in their cafeteria. We arrived at the site outside Salamanca at 1.30. Quite a small site, the sun was shining so we sat out for a bit then did some sewing till tea time, a couple of games before bed.

A very cold night, -3c at 6am frost all over roof light. We drove into Salamanca and did some shopping at Carrefour. We wanted to drive to the historic old town but found that there were road blocks and police blocks, we drove round the same area at least 3 times and still couldn't get where we wanted, in the end we were in a hospital where we had to go into their underground car park and had to pay to get out, there appeared to be some sort of demonstration going on as there were hundreds of people as well as mad traffic about. We went back to site where the men played boules and we sewed. We had an evening meal in the site restaurant which was very nice. It had been a very cold day, cloudy with some sunshine.
Mon 16th
Another cold, frosty night. We were away by 09.15. We had a rather fraught journey as the roads all seemed to have been changed and we were going onto toll roads and off again, we did not seem to be going in the right direction at all, in the end we ignored sat nav and headed for San Sebastián on a scenic mountain road. It was quite dramatic with fantastic mountain vistas and green valleys, the houses looked quite alpine with pitched rooves, there was snow alongside the road in small patches. The road was very mountainous with many hairpin bends. We got back onto the main road and still ended up on a roll road, when we came to leave it we couldn't get to the road we wanted so had to go 6 miles to the next junction then back and we had to pay again to get off, all in all not a very good journey. We did find out that sat nav had not been set to avoid tolls. We arrived at the site in Zarautz at 3.15 and the owner found us two pitches together near the facilities that were not too wet, he said there had been a lot of rain. Harry arrived about an hour after us and got set up, they had had a bad journey as well because the toll road they wanted was closed. We had showers tea and an early night.

Tue 17th
A bit warmer this morning. I did a bit of washing and had a tidy up, put away summer clothes. We went into Zarautz town and carried on the a small peninsula where there was a fishing harbour, had a drink and bun then carried on to the old town. It was very interesting some very smart shops and interesting architecture, lots of really old buildings, many with balconies, although there were lots of blocks of flats they were quite nice to look at. In one square there was a large bandstand and a notice telling tourists that " We are not Spanish, we are not French we are Basque". The language is certainly different with xs, zs and qs. Called at a supermarket before going back to site to sit in the sun for a while, it had been a lovely warm day. We went to the cafe to get wifi then had tea and a few games before bed.
Wed 18th
Another mild morning. I managed to get the wifi boost working. Harry drove to Donastia,San Sebastien, rich decided not to come. We drove through a valley with small towns and some industry, we followed a river for a while and it's banks were strewn with rubbish, hanging in trees and bushes, from previous flooding. We had trouble getting into the town but finally found an underground car park and when we went up the steps we were on the bay in a lovely square. There was a large beach and in the square a man playing a trumpet and a carousel, at the end was a magnificent building which was the City Hall, formerly a casino. We wandered down narrow streets of the old town, stopping for a drink, there were very tall buildings,many apartment blocks with balconies and quite a lot of fashionable shops. We looked in a church, the Basilica of Santa Maria, which although magnificent the statues and gilding were very grubby. We stopped in the main square of the old town which had been used for bull fighting and other activities in the past. We made our way back to the square where we had started, AYUNTAMIENTO, through an old archway. Back to the car and back to site. Showers tea and cards before bed.
Thurs 19th
It was raining when we woke, not too much luckily and it more or less stopped when we were leaving. Got away by 09.50 and straight onto the toll road, not a bad run until we passed into France where there were road works for miles. We stopped for fuel and a drink and when we set off again were doing okay til Harry took a wrong turning then we spent the next hour or so trying to get back on track, we ended up going separate ways but arrived only a few minutes apart. We set up and had tea and Rich took Crackers a walk where he'd been told, along a cycle track and found it swarming with processional caterpillars, when I told the office they knew and said to keep our eyes open! The site was not very big with no views or any real ambience. The showers etc were mixed male and female, didn't like that. It was pleasant and warm, about 18c. A couple of games before bed. Until we went wrong we did find the toll road much quicker but expensive.

A cool and overcast morning, we watched the eclipse of the sun and as it was overcast we got good views when the sun was not hidden completely by clouds. As the forecast was not good we just went into Gradignon, we had a drink, very expensive, and got some meat at a butcher, very expensive so we went to a supermarket for the rest of our shopping. After lunch we did a bit of sewing and in the evening had a game of cards. It didn't really rIn just a few spots.

Today we had a drive to Arcachon a town on the Bassin d'Arcachon. We had drink in a market cafe, a very nice covered market with fresh food. Loraine and I had a walk round the shops but they were very upmarket and expensive. We got some food in the market and sat on the promenade to eat it then we walked along the pier and back, it was cool and trying to rain. We carried on to the the Dune of Pilat, this is the biggest sand dune in Europe which moves and covers more land all the time. There were quite a few cafes and tourist shops around. Rich and I decided to try and climb up. It was a bit of a struggle but we made it, it was vast with great views, just a shame it was very hazy, also spitting with rain. As we turned to go back down we were amazed to see Loraine just reaching the top, she was really thrilled to have made it. Back to site and we all had an early night. There was a light shower while we had tea.
Sun 22nd
Quite a bright morning, we all felt surprisingly fit after yesterday's climb. We did a small amount of washing which dried quite well in the breeze. I cooked a small joint of pork slowly and we had a lovely Sunday dinner, we'd bought the pork at the butcher but think that we weren't charged for it. Loraine and I did a bit of sewing and the men had a game of boules. A game of cards before bed.
Mon 23rd
Cloudy again this morning, Loraine's birthday. We went to St Emilion,quite a long drive by the scenic route, miles and miles of vinyards. St Emilion is the wine centre of the region, an ancient town with steep, cobbled streets. We had a look round the monastery and there was not much else except wine shops, the cafes were much too expensive so we drove out looking for somewhere. We found a coffee bar which did not do food so got a bag of crisps. We called at a small Aldi then back to site. It was a bit warmer and the sun came out sporadically. Harry had done a meal for Loraine's birthday and bought some very indulgent cakes.
Tue 24th
Grey and cool this morning. Harry, Loraine and I went to Bordeaux. We walked to the bus terminus just up the road and took the bus to a tram stop where we got on a tram into the city. It was all automated ticket machines which we managed to fathom out and each leg was only €1.50 each. It is a big city and we walked the length of one long street, Loraine and I both bought a T shirt and had chicken mac nuggets while we waited for Harry. It turned very cold and was raining when we got off the bus. Rich had had a quiet day and took Crackers a long walk. Cards before bed.
Wed 25th
A cold night with frost this morning. We cleared the awning and packed it away, luckily it was sunny and breezy so it dried out. We then walked to the cafe at the top of the road for a drink and crepe. After lunch we sewed while the men played boules. Cards before bed. This site is not one we'd like to come back to, it was not very big and had a few chalets where workmen seems to stay but they put vans and motorhomes on half their pitch as well, quite a few doubled up. The showers/toilets were mixed sex which we didn't like, felt most uncomfortable , although they were very clean. Also there was nowhere to walk the dog.

Not quite so cold this morning, we set off at 09.20. It was showery on and off all day and felt very cold when we stopped for fuel, we went a bit wrong and missed a turning but carried on along back roads before picking up the main road again, arriving at Belle Rivière site at 3.45. It was quite mild and the sun was out, set up,had tea and an early night.

Not too bad a morning, cool but the sun did try to come through. We drove round sussing out park and rides to get into Nantes, then stopped in Saint Luce sur Loire for a snack then went to supermarket for a few things. Did some sewing in the afternoon.

In the morning Harry took Loraine and I into St Luce for the market. It was only a small market mostly produce and it was very cold. In the afternoon the sun came out for a while, we sewed and the men played boules. A game of cards before bed, the clocks went forward.

Drizzly, cold and windy today. We drove into Nantes and looked at the chateaux and cathedral, both very impressive. Had an email from Gill saying that their hire car had been broken into and a friend's passport etc had been taken, lot of hassle for them.
Mon 30th
Not quite so grey this morning and wind dropped a bit, late getting up because of the clocks changing. We went for a drive along the Loire valley, we stopped at a place called Oudon where there was a huge medieval tower. We went in the Cafe du Havre for a drink then had a look at a nearby camp site and drove on to Ancenis, although it had been quite pleasant and sunny it started raining. We went for a walk in the small town but everywhere was closed, we did find a cafe and had a huge baguette each. We crossed over the river and drove back along the other bank, it was very pleasant countryside with views of the Loire, a big, shallow river with many sandbanks and islands. We stopped at a place called Champtoceaux where there were towers and walls of a medieval town which had been abandoned. On the way back a quick stop at Super U then back to site. After tea a couple of games before bed.
Tue 31st
A bit brighter this morning, Rich and I took Crackers a walk beside the river then after lunch we went into Nantes to the "Ile de Machines" a museum inspired by Jules Verne, who was born in Nantes, with huge mechanical animals and insects. As we walked out of the car park alarms started up and an announcement was coming over loud speakers which we couldn't understand and the car park shut down, we don't know if it was anything we'd done or not! We paid to go to the gallery but only a couple of the exhibits were working, a caterpillar and a spider, a bit disappointing. We then went to see the elephant walking round, this was quite spectacular, a huge machine trumpeting and spraying water out of its trunk, up to 50 people could ride on it, we realised that we could have seen this without paying as the whole park was open to the roads. There was also a huge carousel which we didn't go onto. Back to site for tea, cards and bed.
Wed April 1st
Weather just a bit nicer, a bit of sunshine, dry but still a cool breeze. Packed up the awning in the morning and after lunch walked along the river. Did a some sewing in the afternoon.
Thurs 2nd
We were away by 0930, a nice farewell from the owner and a bottle of wine. This was a nice site, pretty garden and lots of trees with a good walk by the river, lovely wildflowers including fritillary and lady's smock. The owner, inner 80s was very friendly although she spoke no English, she was always busy about the place, the only drawback was the showers/toilets, these were mixed and the showers were a bit wonky but heated and plenty of hot water. We made good time and arrived at St Martin Des Besaces about 1.30. The owner was a bit odd, there had been very heavy rain and he was worried that the pitches were waterlogged, also Harry needed more than 6amp electric, anyway after a lot of pfaffing he got us sited. Also we decided to only book 3 nights for now as Harry had been told of a site near Caen port which would suit him for his early morning crossing, so we decided to have a look at that one, the difficulty being Easter weekend and us needing a vet next week. We had tea and a natter before bed. It had been drizzling a bit but was quite mild.

Good Friday. Rained in the night and raining this morning. We were going to go to Caen to check out another site but decided against it. Stayed in and sewed. After lunch went up to the local museum, about the liberation of France and telling about the battles I this area. It rained most of the day but was not really cold. When I sat down with my book I discovered it had rained in on my bed, luckily the quilt had taken out of the water so we were able to get it all dry eventually. Sat 4th Weather not much better, very low cloud a drizzly rain. We went to Caen to look at a site by the port, there was a cheap motorhome area, Harry booked in for Wed night as they sail early Thurs. We went to the museum at Pegasus bridge which was very interesting, got a bit wet and cold looking at the outside exhibits. We called at a cafe just over the bridge, the first house to be liberated inFrance. It was run by the daughter of the couple who had been there in the war, she was 4 at the time of the liberation. I was trying to chat to her about her life, she spoke very good English, but was taken aback by my bill €18.20 for 2drinks and 2 sandwiches, plus a postcard which I left behind in the kerfuffle ! Back on site Harry and went to check on our booking to see if we would get 3days for the price of 2 before deciding whether to stay or move. We did but only the pitch fee was free and again we were bemused by how he explained things and it seemed quite expensive, it was touch and go but we decided to stay, he'd forgotten to put the dog on our bill and are a mistake of €10 on Harry's which he let go. When I sat down and did the sums and realised that we should pay for the dog, electricity etc even if we got the pitch free, and translated into GBP it did work out quite reasonable. As we were playing cards after tea the sky began to clear.
Sun 5th
A full moon last night in clear skies but freezing this morning, 3c when we woke. The sun was trying to come through but it was very cold. We drove to Vire, a small town, there was an old clock tower in the square. We went to a small cafe in a sweet shop then walked back to the square, did. A bit of shopping in a small supermarket and took some photos. The town had been badly damaged in the war but was rebuilt in traditional style. We went on to a war cemetery St Charles de Percy, it was very moving and sobering to read all the names and ages of fallen soldiers and many were unnamed graves. All the lanes we drove down had banks covered in primroses. We then went to the Viaduct de la Souleuvre, an old railway viaduct, 1890s, over the river Souleuvre, thinking it would be a view point, we found that it was an adventure centre with zip wire, bungee jump etc, jumping from the old support towers, it was interesting watching for a while. It has been quite a cold, grey day with just a bit of sunshine.
Mon 6th
Misty this morning and a frost overnight but it brightened up mid morning. We set off to drive to St Lo but as we went through Torigney sur Vire there was quite a lot of people about and a market so we decided to stop there. There were lots of children on an Easter egg hunt. We had a drink in a cafe and a walk round the market, bought a hot dog and chips. Back to the van and sewed in the afternoon. Cards and natter in evening. The afternoon was sunny and warm. Tue 7th Misty and frost again this morning, didn't do a lot, bit of packing. Went for lunch at the local Relais, it was really good, salad, main meal, (steak or sausage & chips) dessert and coffee, €9.20. We took Crackers to the vet, €32.45! Sewed in afternoon while men did a bit of packing, nearly finished my project. Cards and natter, talked about next hol we hope to share, can't believe it is our last night! The site had been okay, in a nice location with pretty gardens,but the facilities were not very good and the misunderstanding with the owner didn't help. There was a lot of bird life with beautiful bird songs including cuckoo and woodpecker. Site fees

A nice, mild morning but a frost overnight. Got packed up and said a tearful farewell to H&L. We drove to La Maillarey sur Seine and got there by noon so had our sandwiches in a layby in a forest and carried on to Ault, arriving at 2.45. It had been quite a pleasant journey passing through a few lovely looking small towns East of Caen, lots of half timbered, low Norman style houses and a few larger ones. The towns looked busy and inviting, not like most we'd been to which were closed. Lovely rolling farming country with lots of activity going on and many half timbered farm houses, unfortunately also many falling into ruin. We found the Aire which we expected to be by a beach but it was by a sports hall, a car park really, a bit disappointing. We walked down to find the beach which was below high cliffs and pebbly. It was a strange town, a bit like any seaside town in winter, closed and dilapidated but built on a steep hill with narrow streets and tall houses which all had names. Apparently the low town had been swallowed by the sea a long time ago. We had tea, took a short walk and had an early night.

Thurs 9th
Our wedding anniversary. Didn't sleep at all well. Walked to front and tide was out with dozens of people wading in the sea, some with nets, presumably shrimping. Away by ?.? Not a very interesting trip, very hazy all day but sunny. Went to Auchan for fuel and some shopping then on to the Aire. Walked the length of the pier where there were dozens of fishermen, then sat in Sun for rest of afternoon. The Aire was packed full. An early night and up at 4am to get to ferry
Fri 10th
Checked in and had an hour to wait for ferry, got breakfast, it was hazy but not too cold. A calm crossing but still hazy. Drove to East Boldre and a pub called the Turfcutters Arms where we'd arranged to meet Jen. Wed only just arrived and I was having a wash when they turned up. We had a nice meal and a catch up. A lazy afternoon dozing then walked the dog,it was sunny just a bit cool.

Sun 1st Mar
We were just getting breakfast when Loraine came round very upset, Harry was having a bad nosebleed and it had been going on for almost an hour, we dropped everything and took him down to the hospital, Loraine drove! When we got there they took him straight through to the treatment area but needed his passport, I stayed while Rich & Loraine went back for it. We waited for a good while then Rich said he may as well go so he walked back to the site. We must have waited 2 hours with nothing said to us, there was a constant stream of people coming in. Eventually Loraine went to ask what was happening and they let her go to see him he had been ready to be discharged but was dizzy when he sat up so they wanted to keep him in a bit longer, we decided to go back and get a drink and bite to eat then return. When we got back Rich had started the washing, we hadn't been there half an hour when Harry turned up! He had been discharged, started to walk but then got a taxi, he did not look at all well. He slept for most of the day and by tea time was feeling better and looked much better. We did our washing and helped Loraine with hers then sat in beautiful sunshine for the afternoon. It was the best weather so far.
Mon 2nd
Another lovely morning with a beautiful "mackerel" sky, white clouds against a clear blue background. Harry had had a good night and was up and about but didn't look well and was very weak. Loraine and I went into town on the bus, had a bit of lunch overlooking the beach then a good mooch round the shops. When we got back Harry seemed a lot better and looked more like himself. After tea Rich and I took Crackers for a walk on the new road and then I went to line dancing. It had been a lovely summery day, hot sun and hardly any breeze.
Tue 3rd
Another fine morning, still a bit cool but soon warmed up. Loraine, Gill & I took a taxi to the market and had a good wander round, the usual noisy, bustling place, bought a scarf and a tea towel, it was really hot in the sun. In the afternoon we went to a restaurant, Il Cappucino, with H&L, took a taxi again. We had a really good meal for €7.50. Did nothing for the rest of the day, too late to sunbathe , and watched a video.
Wed 4th
A bit hazy this morning but mild, no breeze. Harry took me, Gill & Loraine up the lanes to get some photos of the flowers and then dropped us into town. We took some pics of the sand sculptures on Fisherman's beach and had a cuppa and apple pie. Looked round the shops again, I bought a lovely leather handbag. We got a taxi back to site, Rich had started to pack a few things outside. After lunch we went to the beach, Gale was a bit busy for the dog so we drove a bit further to another quieter one, the beach was more sloping and the sea was quite rough, I managed to get soaked paddling again! I'd taken the precaution of taking a spare pair of trousers. We had a drink at a beachside cafe, it was lovely and warm. It was the first time Harry had driven this week. Back to site and tea and a game of cards.

Another nice but slightly hazy morning. H&L and I went to find a post office as we were still a bit worried about the road toll situation, we had logged in when we arrived but the ticket expired 2 days ago, we read on the Internet that the post offices knew all the details and would give us a pass for one trip. When we found the post office, took our ticket and queued the girl didn't know anything about it, even called a supervisor over, many shrugs and puzzled looks. Did we want to go to the airport? No. Did we want a €20 ticket to last however long? No. We want to take one trip out of the country into Spain, blank looks and then we were told to just drive out and wave bye bye to Portugal! Of course most of this was in mime. Quick trip to Chinese shop for Loraine to replace her bucket, her Lakeland one having been kept by the hospital full of Harry's blood. Back on site and packed up pitch etc. Had an hour or so with Gill then a bit of lunch and a spot of sunbathing. In the evening we all went to Il Capuccinos for a meal which was a very nice evening. We enjoyed our time in Albufeira, didn't do much with the rally as the things we did we thought were not well organised. We felt the stewards were a bit half hearted, didn't check when Harry was ill. We saw quite a bit of birdlife, serin and little egrets mostly but saw magpies and hoopoe and heard a cuckoo,the area we were in had more trees, mimosa, bottle brush, pepper and eucalyptus. The whole area was a sea of yellow with oxalis flowers.

Quite cool this morning but clear skies. We finished packing up and said goodbye to Gil & Colin left at 10.00. A good run, we stopped for fuel just as we entered Spain and had a coffe and doughnut. Arrived El Rocio at 1.00, 2.00 Spanish time. The site was very busy, seems to be 2 rallies, ACSI and Caravan Club, we were lucky to get adjacent pitches a people were rolling in. It was very hot so sat for a while. We shared tea with H&L then had an early night.

Sat 7th
Woke in the night and it was so quiet couldn't get back to sleep, no road noise or dogs barking as there was at Albufeira, had a cuppa and read. Bright cool morning. We went to Almonte had a drink and went to the municipal market where we got some meat, fish and veg, then into Mercadona for rest of the shopping, it was a bit chaotic. Back to site for lunch and a rest then went into El Rocio, it was quite busy and quite a few horses about and people in the "brotherhood" houses, lots of noisy groups. We called at a cafe and had tapas which was very nice. H&L came round for a game. It had been a very hot day after the cool start, bright blue sky without a cloud.
Sun 8th
Another beautiful morning. We went into El Rocio and watched a couple of parades; youngsters dressed in traditional hats and trousers led playing flutes and drums, very slowly, followed by people carrying gold and silver staves, women carried flower baskets and more children carried fruit, veg and tinned goods in baskets, the banners came last surrounded by town dignitaries. As one group left the church the bells pealed out and the next group filed in. It was very interesting and different to any church service at home. The town was very busy with horse and mule carts giving trips, some with jingling harness, but some unfortunately looking a bit dusty and sad. It was very hot with a cloudless blue sky. Back on site I put the huge chicken we'd bought yesterday in the oven to cook slowly. We had a bit of lunch and sat in the sun for a while, it was very hot. There was an English couple with a huge van with slide outs and a gazebo on their pitch, real flashy, Harry reckoned he was a criminal on the run! They had 2 dogs and a cat with them and the dog was continually barking and she was yelling at it you could hear her all over the site. While we were sitting outside they had a phone call, both of the shouting at the top of their voices, they were 4 pitches away and we could hear every word it was ridiculous. Loraine and I did a bit of sewing, then Harry did the veg and we had a lovely Sunday roast dinner. After dinner we went round for a game and unfortunately Harry had another nose bleed, it seemed to be mild so hope for the best. We went to check where the nearest emergency centre is just in case. There was a beautiful sunset.
Mon 9th
Bright again this morning, Harry was fine. We went to terrace cafe to check on Internet then had a bit of lunch. After lunch we drove to Acerbon Palace in Donana National Park. Had a look round the house, an old hunting lodge, and stroll around the grounds, it was a glorious day sunny with a light breeze, there were lots of different wild flowers, some very small and butterflies about. As we drove back we parked by the lake at El Rocio to take some photos, there were swallows diving down to the mud and storks, flamingos and a glossy ibis on the water. Back for tea, chicken curry, and a few games before bed.
Tue 10th
A misty morning and everything very damp. We drove to Heulva to see the replica ships, Pinta, Nina & Santa Maria, in which Columbus set sail for the Indies but discovered America instead.
The mist lifted and it was warm, unfortunately we were over run by school parties and the peace was shattered. It was very interesting. We went on to find the Chinese Wok restaurant but the old chap who takes euros for parking told us it had moved and gave us directions. We found it and it was huge, there were only 3 people in but it did fill up a bit later. The food was as good as ever. Heading back for site we got a bit lost and went quite a bit out of our way. A very nice, interesting day, but tiring!
Wed 11th
A bright, clear morning again. Harry took Loraine and I into El Rocio for a last look round, it was very quiet but still quite a few horse and traps around. We had a drink and Loraine got a couple of things for her grandchildren. We had a look at some horses with foals by the lake and back for lunch.
AToo hot to sit in sun so read in shade for a while then went to cafe for Internet, not a very good signal. We sewed for a while then got a joint tea eating outside in our awning. Packed up the awning and an early night.
Thurs 12th
A very misty, damp morning. We were away by 10.20, we went in convoy as we were a bit worried about Harry still. As we got inland the mist cleared but there was the odd patch until beyond Seville. We stopped for fuel and lunch then carried on, I dozed for quite a while. We arrived at Caceres at 3 and set up pitch, it was hot but not as hot as El Rocio had been. I changed sheets ready for washing tomorrow, and had a sweep out, everything was so sandy from El Rocio. Went to site restaurant for a meal which was very nice.

Fri 13th
Cool and breezy this morning. Did loads of washing which dried well with sun and wind, also gave Crackers a bath. In afternoon Harry, Loraine and I walked over to Chinese shop and to find a cash machine on the industrial estate, it was a huge estate and we walked for ages and we're giving up when we found a cafe so we went I. For a drink and sit down, it was a surprise, we'd expected a scruffy canteen but it was very clean. We carried on and a man took pity on us wandering round like lost souls and told us where the bank was, we had to retrace our steps. Finally back to site and got tea and got washing in then a game of cards before bed.
Sat 14th
Cool wind this morning, packed up and away by 10.10. A good, uneventful journey through lovely green valleys with lots of sheep and cattle. Around Plasencia we saw many birds of prey , kites and 20-30 eagles amongst others we didn't know, we also saw lots of stork's nests. We stopped for fuel just off the motorway and had a drink and a bun in their cafeteria. We arrived at the site outside Salamanca at 1.30. Quite a small site, the sun was shining so we sat out for a bit then did some sewing till tea time, a couple of games before bed.

A very cold night, -3c at 6am frost all over roof light. We drove into Salamanca and did some shopping at Carrefour. We wanted to drive to the historic old town but found that there were road blocks and police blocks, we drove round the same area at least 3 times and still couldn't get where we wanted, in the end we were in a hospital where we had to go into their underground car park and had to pay to get out, there appeared to be some sort of demonstration going on as there were hundreds of people as well as mad traffic about. We went back to site where the men played boules and we sewed. We had an evening meal in the site restaurant which was very nice. It had been a very cold day, cloudy with some sunshine.
Mon 16th
Another cold, frosty night. We were away by 09.15. We had a rather fraught journey as the roads all seemed to have been changed and we were going onto toll roads and off again, we did not seem to be going in the right direction at all, in the end we ignored sat nav and headed for San Sebastián on a scenic mountain road. It was quite dramatic with fantastic mountain vistas and green valleys, the houses looked quite alpine with pitched rooves, there was snow alongside the road in small patches. The road was very mountainous with many hairpin bends. We got back onto the main road and still ended up on a roll road, when we came to leave it we couldn't get to the road we wanted so had to go 6 miles to the next junction then back and we had to pay again to get off, all in all not a very good journey. We did find out that sat nav had not been set to avoid tolls. We arrived at the site in Zarautz at 3.15 and the owner found us two pitches together near the facilities that were not too wet, he said there had been a lot of rain. Harry arrived about an hour after us and got set up, they had had a bad journey as well because the toll road they wanted was closed. We had showers tea and an early night.

Tue 17th
A bit warmer this morning. I did a bit of washing and had a tidy up, put away summer clothes. We went into Zarautz town and carried on the a small peninsula where there was a fishing harbour, had a drink and bun then carried on to the old town. It was very interesting some very smart shops and interesting architecture, lots of really old buildings, many with balconies, although there were lots of blocks of flats they were quite nice to look at. In one square there was a large bandstand and a notice telling tourists that " We are not Spanish, we are not French we are Basque". The language is certainly different with xs, zs and qs. Called at a supermarket before going back to site to sit in the sun for a while, it had been a lovely warm day. We went to the cafe to get wifi then had tea and a few games before bed.
Wed 18th
Another mild morning. I managed to get the wifi boost working. Harry drove to Donastia,San Sebastien, rich decided not to come. We drove through a valley with small towns and some industry, we followed a river for a while and it's banks were strewn with rubbish, hanging in trees and bushes, from previous flooding. We had trouble getting into the town but finally found an underground car park and when we went up the steps we were on the bay in a lovely square. There was a large beach and in the square a man playing a trumpet and a carousel, at the end was a magnificent building which was the City Hall, formerly a casino. We wandered down narrow streets of the old town, stopping for a drink, there were very tall buildings,many apartment blocks with balconies and quite a lot of fashionable shops. We looked in a church, the Basilica of Santa Maria, which although magnificent the statues and gilding were very grubby. We stopped in the main square of the old town which had been used for bull fighting and other activities in the past. We made our way back to the square where we had started, AYUNTAMIENTO, through an old archway. Back to the car and back to site. Showers tea and cards before bed.
Thurs 19th
It was raining when we woke, not too much luckily and it more or less stopped when we were leaving. Got away by 09.50 and straight onto the toll road, not a bad run until we passed into France where there were road works for miles. We stopped for fuel and a drink and when we set off again were doing okay til Harry took a wrong turning then we spent the next hour or so trying to get back on track, we ended up going separate ways but arrived only a few minutes apart. We set up and had tea and Rich took Crackers a walk where he'd been told, along a cycle track and found it swarming with processional caterpillars, when I told the office they knew and said to keep our eyes open! The site was not very big with no views or any real ambience. The showers etc were mixed male and female, didn't like that. It was pleasant and warm, about 18c. A couple of games before bed. Until we went wrong we did find the toll road much quicker but expensive.

A cool and overcast morning, we watched the eclipse of the sun and as it was overcast we got good views when the sun was not hidden completely by clouds. As the forecast was not good we just went into Gradignon, we had a drink, very expensive, and got some meat at a butcher, very expensive so we went to a supermarket for the rest of our shopping. After lunch we did a bit of sewing and in the evening had a game of cards. It didn't really rIn just a few spots.

Today we had a drive to Arcachon a town on the Bassin d'Arcachon. We had drink in a market cafe, a very nice covered market with fresh food. Loraine and I had a walk round the shops but they were very upmarket and expensive. We got some food in the market and sat on the promenade to eat it then we walked along the pier and back, it was cool and trying to rain. We carried on to the the Dune of Pilat, this is the biggest sand dune in Europe which moves and covers more land all the time. There were quite a few cafes and tourist shops around. Rich and I decided to try and climb up. It was a bit of a struggle but we made it, it was vast with great views, just a shame it was very hazy, also spitting with rain. As we turned to go back down we were amazed to see Loraine just reaching the top, she was really thrilled to have made it. Back to site and we all had an early night. There was a light shower while we had tea.
Sun 22nd
Quite a bright morning, we all felt surprisingly fit after yesterday's climb. We did a small amount of washing which dried quite well in the breeze. I cooked a small joint of pork slowly and we had a lovely Sunday dinner, we'd bought the pork at the butcher but think that we weren't charged for it. Loraine and I did a bit of sewing and the men had a game of boules. A game of cards before bed.
Mon 23rd
Cloudy again this morning, Loraine's birthday. We went to St Emilion,quite a long drive by the scenic route, miles and miles of vinyards. St Emilion is the wine centre of the region, an ancient town with steep, cobbled streets. We had a look round the monastery and there was not much else except wine shops, the cafes were much too expensive so we drove out looking for somewhere. We found a coffee bar which did not do food so got a bag of crisps. We called at a small Aldi then back to site. It was a bit warmer and the sun came out sporadically. Harry had done a meal for Loraine's birthday and bought some very indulgent cakes.
Tue 24th
Grey and cool this morning. Harry, Loraine and I went to Bordeaux. We walked to the bus terminus just up the road and took the bus to a tram stop where we got on a tram into the city. It was all automated ticket machines which we managed to fathom out and each leg was only €1.50 each. It is a big city and we walked the length of one long street, Loraine and I both bought a T shirt and had chicken mac nuggets while we waited for Harry. It turned very cold and was raining when we got off the bus. Rich had had a quiet day and took Crackers a long walk. Cards before bed.
Wed 25th
A cold night with frost this morning. We cleared the awning and packed it away, luckily it was sunny and breezy so it dried out. We then walked to the cafe at the top of the road for a drink and crepe. After lunch we sewed while the men played boules. Cards before bed. This site is not one we'd like to come back to, it was not very big and had a few chalets where workmen seems to stay but they put vans and motorhomes on half their pitch as well, quite a few doubled up. The showers/toilets were mixed sex which we didn't like, felt most uncomfortable , although they were very clean. Also there was nowhere to walk the dog.
Thurs 26th
Not quite so cold this morning, we set off at 09.20. It was showery on and off all day and felt very cold when we stopped for fuel, we went a bit wrong and missed a turning but carried on along back roads before picking up the main road again, arriving at Belle Rivière site at 3.45. It was quite mild and the sun was out, set up,had tea and an early night.

Not too bad a morning, cool but the sun did try to come through. We drove round sussing out park and rides to get into Nantes, then stopped in Saint Luce sur Loire for a snack then went to supermarket for a few things. Did some sewing in the afternoon.
Sat 28th
In the morning Harry took Loraine and I into St Luce for the market. It was only a small market mostly produce and it was very cold. In the afternoon the sun came out for a while, we sewed and the men played boules. A game of cards before bed, the clocks went forward.
Sun 29th
Drizzly, cold and windy today. We drove into Nantes and looked at the chateaux and cathedral, both very impressive. Had an email from Gill saying that their hire car had been broken into and a friend's passport etc had been taken, lot of hassle for them.
Mon 30th
Not quite so grey this morning and wind dropped a bit, late getting up because of the clocks changing. We went for a drive along the Loire valley, we stopped at a place called Oudon where there was a huge medieval tower. We went in the Cafe du Havre for a drink then had a look at a nearby camp site and drove on to Ancenis, although it had been quite pleasant and sunny it started raining. We went for a walk in the small town but everywhere was closed, we did find a cafe and had a huge baguette each. We crossed over the river and drove back along the other bank, it was very pleasant countryside with views of the Loire, a big, shallow river with many sandbanks and islands. We stopped at a place called Champtoceaux where there were towers and walls of a medieval town which had been abandoned. On the way back a quick stop at Super U then back to site. After tea a couple of games before bed.
Tue 31st
A bit brighter this morning, Rich and I took Crackers a walk beside the river then after lunch we went into Nantes to the "Ile de Machines" a museum inspired by Jules Verne, who was born in Nantes, with huge mechanical animals and insects. As we walked out of the car park alarms started up and an announcement was coming over loud speakers which we couldn't understand and the car park shut down, we don't know if it was anything we'd done or not! We paid to go to the gallery but only a couple of the exhibits were working, a caterpillar and a spider, a bit disappointing. We then went to see the elephant walking round, this was quite spectacular, a huge machine trumpeting and spraying water out of its trunk, up to 50 people could ride on it, we realised that we could have seen this without paying as the whole park was open to the roads. There was also a huge carousel which we didn't go onto. Back to site for tea, cards and bed.
Wed April 1st
Weather just a bit nicer, a bit of sunshine, dry but still a cool breeze. Packed up the awning in the morning and after lunch walked along the river. Did a some sewing in the afternoon.
Thurs 2nd
We were away by 0930, a nice farewell from the owner and a bottle of wine. This was a nice site, pretty garden and lots of trees with a good walk by the river, lovely wildflowers including fritillary and lady's smock. The owner, inner 80s was very friendly although she spoke no English, she was always busy about the place, the only drawback was the showers/toilets, these were mixed and the showers were a bit wonky but heated and plenty of hot water. We made good time and arrived at St Martin Des Besaces about 1.30. The owner was a bit odd, there had been very heavy rain and he was worried that the pitches were waterlogged, also Harry needed more than 6amp electric, anyway after a lot of pfaffing he got us sited. Also we decided to only book 3 nights for now as Harry had been told of a site near Caen port which would suit him for his early morning crossing, so we decided to have a look at that one, the difficulty being Easter weekend and us needing a vet next week. We had tea and a natter before bed. It had been drizzling a bit but was quite mild.

Fri 3rd
Good Friday. Rained in the night and raining this morning. We were going to go to Caen to check out another site but decided against it. Stayed in and sewed. After lunch went up to the local museum, about the liberation of France and telling about the battles I this area. It rained most of the day but was not really cold. When I sat down with my book I discovered it had rained in on my bed, luckily the quilt had taken out of the water so we were able to get it all dry eventually. Sat 4th Weather not much better, very low cloud a drizzly rain. We went to Caen to look at a site by the port, there was a cheap motorhome area, Harry booked in for Wed night as they sail early Thurs. We went to the museum at Pegasus bridge which was very interesting, got a bit wet and cold looking at the outside exhibits. We called at a cafe just over the bridge, the first house to be liberated inFrance. It was run by the daughter of the couple who had been there in the war, she was 4 at the time of the liberation. I was trying to chat to her about her life, she spoke very good English, but was taken aback by my bill €18.20 for 2drinks and 2 sandwiches, plus a postcard which I left behind in the kerfuffle ! Back on site Harry and went to check on our booking to see if we would get 3days for the price of 2 before deciding whether to stay or move. We did but only the pitch fee was free and again we were bemused by how he explained things and it seemed quite expensive, it was touch and go but we decided to stay, he'd forgotten to put the dog on our bill and are a mistake of €10 on Harry's which he let go. When I sat down and did the sums and realised that we should pay for the dog, electricity etc even if we got the pitch free, and translated into GBP it did work out quite reasonable. As we were playing cards after tea the sky began to clear.
Sun 5th
A full moon last night in clear skies but freezing this morning, 3c when we woke. The sun was trying to come through but it was very cold. We drove to Vire, a small town, there was an old clock tower in the square. We went to a small cafe in a sweet shop then walked back to the square, did. A bit of shopping in a small supermarket and took some photos. The town had been badly damaged in the war but was rebuilt in traditional style. We went on to a war cemetery St Charles de Percy, it was very moving and sobering to read all the names and ages of fallen soldiers and many were unnamed graves. All the lanes we drove down had banks covered in primroses. We then went to the Viaduct de la Souleuvre, an old railway viaduct, 1890s, over the river Souleuvre, thinking it would be a view point, we found that it was an adventure centre with zip wire, bungee jump etc, jumping from the old support towers, it was interesting watching for a while. It has been quite a cold, grey day with just a bit of sunshine.
Mon 6th
Misty this morning and a frost overnight but it brightened up mid morning. We set off to drive to St Lo but as we went through Torigney sur Vire there was quite a lot of people about and a market so we decided to stop there. There were lots of children on an Easter egg hunt. We had a drink in a cafe and a walk round the market, bought a hot dog and chips. Back to the van and sewed in the afternoon. Cards and natter in evening. The afternoon was sunny and warm. Tue 7th Misty and frost again this morning, didn't do a lot, bit of packing. Went for lunch at the local Relais, it was really good, salad, main meal, (steak or sausage & chips) dessert and coffee, €9.20. We took Crackers to the vet, €32.45! Sewed in afternoon while men did a bit of packing, nearly finished my project. Cards and natter, talked about next hol we hope to share, can't believe it is our last night! The site had been okay, in a nice location with pretty gardens,but the facilities were not very good and the misunderstanding with the owner didn't help. There was a lot of bird life with beautiful bird songs including cuckoo and woodpecker. Site fees
Wed 8th
A nice, mild morning but a frost overnight. Got packed up and said a tearful farewell to H&L. We drove to La Maillarey sur Seine and got there by noon so had our sandwiches in a layby in a forest and carried on to Ault, arriving at 2.45. It had been quite a pleasant journey passing through a few lovely looking small towns East of Caen, lots of half timbered, low Norman style houses and a few larger ones. The towns looked busy and inviting, not like most we'd been to which were closed. Lovely rolling farming country with lots of activity going on and many half timbered farm houses, unfortunately also many falling into ruin. We found the Aire which we expected to be by a beach but it was by a sports hall, a car park really, a bit disappointing. We walked down to find the beach which was below high cliffs and pebbly. It was a strange town, a bit like any seaside town in winter, closed and dilapidated but built on a steep hill with narrow streets and tall houses which all had names. Apparently the low town had been swallowed by the sea a long time ago. We had tea, took a short walk and had an early night.

Thurs 9th
Our wedding anniversary. Didn't sleep at all well. Walked to front and tide was out with dozens of people wading in the sea, some with nets, presumably shrimping. Away by ?.? Not a very interesting trip, very hazy all day but sunny. Went to Auchan for fuel and some shopping then on to the Aire. Walked the length of the pier where there were dozens of fishermen, then sat in Sun for rest of afternoon. The Aire was packed full. An early night and up at 4am to get to ferry
Fri 10th
Checked in and had an hour to wait for ferry, got breakfast, it was hazy but not too cold. A calm crossing but still hazy. Drove to East Boldre and a pub called the Turfcutters Arms where we'd arranged to meet Jen. Wed only just arrived and I was having a wash when they turned up. We had a nice meal and a catch up. A lazy afternoon dozing then walked the dog,it was sunny just a bit cool.
