Ravenglass Sept 2016

Lake District Sept 2016

Thurs 22nd

Away by 0945, a lovely, clear, sunny morning, a good run until the sat nav took us of the main road and across the moors along narrow roads with cattle and sheep wandering about, very pretty but a bit nerve wracking.

We arrived at Ravenglass just after 2, Harry & Loraine had arrived minutes before us. We set up and had a chat then went to a local pub for a meal, then back too our van for a good catch up before bed. It was quite cool and breezy in the evening.

Fri

Harry & Loraine needed some shopping so I went with them to Whitehaven where there is a Morrisons. Rich helped Harry put his awning up? After lunch we did some sewing in before a pub meal in the village, we all had fish and chips which was nice but a bit expensive. It was a very windy night, acorns kept landing on the roof keeping us awake.
Sat

There was an Antiques fair in the village Hall so Rich took Loraine and I to it, we had a look round, not a lot there, then Harry fetched us. After lunch we did some sewing and I cooked tea for us all. It rained all night.
Sun

After a wet night it was not a bad morning, cloudy and breezy, we took a drive to show H&L the way we had come over the hills, stopped for a drink in a barn on a farm, do it yourself with an honesty box, mainly for walkers we decided but very nice and different.

We did some sewing in the afternoon and Harry got tea for us all. A game of triominoes after tea.
Mon

Quiet night but rained in the morning. After lunch we took a drive round found a craft shop, also one that wasn't open, rain and low cloud so not many views, went to the coast at Seascale.

Did a bit of sewing then a game of cards after tea. The sun came out briefly in the evening.
Tue

Rain overnight and raining this morning. It cleared up a bit mid morning so we decided to go on the Ravenglass light railway, the station is right by the site.

A very interesting ride up to Dalegarth, as far as the train went, we went along the estuary, very muddy at low tide and through the hills. We went up with a Diesel engine. We had a snack in the station cafe and returned with a steam engine, the track was only 3ft gauge and the carriages were very small, It was quite a nice afternoon, grey but not cold and occasional glimpses of the sun.

In the evening we played triominoes.
Wed

Another grey, wet morning so stayed in. After lunch it stopped raining so Rich and I went a walk to the Roman Bathhouse, along the beach and back through the village, it was quite warm but breezy in the open. Did a bit of sewing before tea. Heavy rain and wind with twigs and acorns thumping on the roof.
Thurs

A very noisy night, high winds and rain. We went to Barrow in Furness, we called in a caravan dealers at Ulverston, Harry got a new step and we got a fire extinguisher. We carried on to Barrow and got some fuel then called at Aldi and Poundworld. We drove over a causeway to the Isle of Walney, drove around a bit and found a pub where we had a very nice snack. We then went to the Museum which was set in an old dry dock from the shipyard that used to be there, very interesting.

Had a game of cards before bed. The day had been mainly dry
Fri

A much quieter night. We went to Muncaster Castle which is a short way from the site. We watched an owl flying show which was very good then had a snack before going round the castle. The family still live in the castle and run it themselves, it is in a beautiful spot with views up Eskdale to Scafell and lovely grounds planted with many shrubs and trees. We watched another bird show with raptors and vultures, it was excellent with the birds seeming really happy and free flying, the current owner greeted us as we arrived, the two demonstrators were very good. It had been sunny most of the day but a bit cooler.

Back to the van and I got tea for us all and we had a game of cards after.
Sat Oct 1st

Quite a nice day, sunny and calm just a bit cool. We walked to the Roman Bath House and along the beach through the village, then went to the station cafe for a drink.

Did some sewing in the afternoon and Harry got tea for us, game of triominoes before bed.
Sun Oct 2nd

A lovely sunny morning but chilly out of the sun, very calm. We started to empty the awning then went to Seascale for a walk on the beach. A nice little place we had a drink on the green looking out to sea with the Isle of Man on the horizon, lovely blue skies and sunshine.

Sewing in the afternoon then a game of cards before bed.
Mon 3rd

Very blustery this morning but sun between clouds. We packed up the awning before going to the Ratty Arms for lunch, sitting in a mock railway carriage looking at trains, a very nice meal.

Rich & Harry went a walk while Loraine and I sewed. Game of cards before bed.
Tue 4th

Finished packing and away by 0950. Not a bad run, home by 2.30

Sat 20th

This was our first trip in the new caravan.
We set of at 11.30 and arrived at the Brynarian site in Llanon at 2.15. Thhere was nobody around and no reception. We phoned a number on a board and were told to pitch where we liked. We had just got the awning up when it started to rain. It rained quite heavily all night and as we were under trees and it was very windy the noise kept us awake quite a bit.

Sun 21st

We went to Caron's where we met her new chap who seems very nice and easy to get on with. We went for a meal at Cwmann Tavern which was very nice, had an enjoyable time.
We sat in the van the rest of the day listening to the wind and rain, another disturbed night.

Mon 22nd

Still wet but not quite such heavy rain. W went to see a gold mine at Pumpsaint which was very interesting, quite a scramble to get to it and back out of it through Roman workings.
In the afternoon we watch telly and the sun came out about 4pm.

Tue 23rd

A glorious, sunny day. We went to Newquay which was very busy. We walked along the harbour and saw dolphins out in the bay, watched all the children playing in the sea and on the beach for a while then got fish and chips. We walked to the coastal path and climbed up for quite a way before giving up as it was so hot. Back to the car and then back to van where we took the awning down, still sunny and warm.

Wed 24th

Up and away, home by midday.

Quite a strange site with no wardens about, basic facilities. Our first trip in the caravan so a bit strange and surprisingly different to the motor-home.
